How a Brighton Matcha stall Got Big-Brand Loyalty Tools (Without the Big-Brand Budget)
Walk through Churchill Square shopping centre in Brighton on a warm afternoon and you might stop for a matcha. If you do, you'll leave with more than a drink — you'll leave with a loyalty card sitting quietly in your Apple Wallet, and a local business that can now reach you in the same way McDonald's and Uber can.
That business is Matcha Angels. And the technology making it happen is ReturnKit.
The problem with loyalty for independent businesses
Most small businesses still run loyalty on paper stamp cards. They get lost. They get forgotten. And they give the business owner absolutely no way to communicate with their customers once they've walked out the door.
Big brands have solved this. McDonald's sends you deals and a notification when you're nearby. Uber keeps you in the loop with offers. They have apps, budgets, and entire tech teams dedicated to keeping customers engaged.
Independent businesses haven't had access to any of that. Until now.
What ReturnKit set up for Matcha Angels
When Matcha Angels came on board with ReturnKit, here's what we built for them:
A fully branded Apple Wallet loyalty card. Pink, on-brand, with the Matcha Angels logo, a 10-stamp reward scheme, all 'Powered by ReturnKit.co.uk' . No app download required — customers simply add it to their iPhone or google wallet in seconds.

Geo-targeted push notifications for Iphones. When a customer with the card walks near Churchill Square, their phone can automatically trigger a notification — reminding them that Matcha Angels is right there.

Direct push messaging. Matcha Angels can send messages straight to their customers' lock screens — promoting seasonal drinks, sharing opening hours, or simply saying hello. Messages like "Too Darn Hot? We'd love to see you for a nice iced Matcha. Open today 11–5 💗" land directly on customer phones, just like a message from a friend.
The moment that says it all
One of our favourite moments from this launch was a simple screenshot of a customer's notification centre. There, sitting alongside notifications from McDonald's, Nandos and Uber, was Matcha Angels — a small, independent café in Brighton — communicating with their customers in exactly the same way.

That's not luck. That's what the right tools can do for an independent business.
Why this matters for your business
Customer retention is one of the biggest challenges any small business faces. Research consistently shows that it costs significantly more to acquire a new customer than to retain an existing one. A loyalty programme that actually works — one that lives on your customer's phone, reminds them you exist, and rewards them for coming back — is one of the most powerful tools you can have.
ReturnKit brings that capability to independent UK businesses, with hands-on setup and support from a real person — not a self-serve platform that leaves you to figure it out alone.
